I’m sure most of you like me watched or listened to the news this past week in horror and revulsion at the events that unfolded in Israel and Gaza. Could there be anyone of human reason or sentiment that does not feel empathy and sorrow at the barbarism of the attacks and sufferings undergone by Israelis and Palestinians alike? There is for me no “good” side here; only revulsion and horror at what has been done to, and by, both sides.

But like many of you I suspect that not all may be well with “the narrative”. Already there are claims that some of the grizzly pictures and videos circulating on the internet are “photoshopped” or elaborated fakes. Whether that’s true or not, I have no idea. What I do know is that false flags are very easy to stage, but to push humans into the state of rage and insanity we see emerging in the wake of these events, it’s necessary to unhinge people from reason completely, and that usually means that at least some of the reported barbarism and cruelty be genuine, otherwise calls for the mass deportation and evacuation of a million people – itself another barbarism worthy of a Nabuchodonossor or an Ashurbanipal – would not gain any traction.
Yet, throughout all of this, I suspect that you, like me, may be grappling with the nagging suspicion that there is something truly “off” about this whole narrative. How, for example, could Israel have suffered such a catastrophic attack? Where was its celebrated and world-renowned intelligence, the Mossad? Are we to believe that the Mossad had absolutely no human agents inside Gaza or Hamas? Or that any and all of their intelligence was ignored? Where were the technological alerts? How was one of the most secure borders in the world breeched so easily?
…On and on the questions could go, and indeed, they began to be asked almost as soon as the attacks were over.
But many of you spotted the following story, and shared it. It’s a story that in fact has appeared before. Indeed, as you will read, it appeared in 2009 and has been re-run now in the aftermath of the attacks and the Israeli response, and it bears witness to what has often been said on this website: history may not repeat, but it often rhymes:
And there you have it… there are natural gas reserves at stake, and so once again one can add energy and energy supplies to the complicated religio-cultural geopolitics of the Middle East:
The issue of sovereignty over Gaza’s gas fields is crucial. From a legal standpoint, the gas reserves belong to Palestine.
The death of Yasser Arafat, the election of the Hamas government and the ruin of the Palestinian Authority have enabled Israel to establish de facto control over Gaza’s offshore gas reserves.
British Gas (BG Group) has been dealing with the Tel Aviv government. In turn, the Hamas government has been bypassed in regards to exploration and development rights over the gas fields.
The election of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in 2001 was a major turning point. Palestine’s sovereignty over the offshore gas fields was challenged in the Israeli Supreme Court. Sharon stated unequivocally that “Israel would never buy gas from Palestine” intimating that Gaza’s offshore gas reserves belong to Israel.
In 2003, Ariel Sharon, vetoed an initial deal, which would allow British Gas to supply Israel with natural gas from Gaza’s offshore wells. (The Independent, August 19, 2003)
The election victory of Hamas in 2006 was conducive to the demise of the Palestinian Authority, which became confined to the West Bank, under the proxy regime of Mahmoud Abbas.
In 2006, British Gas “was close to signing a deal to pump the gas to Egypt.” (Times, May, 23, 2007). According to reports, British Prime Minister Tony Blair intervened on behalf of Israel with a view to shunting the agreement with Egypt.
The following year, in May 2007, the Israeli Cabinet approved a proposal by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert “to buy gas from the Palestinian Authority.” The proposed contract was for $4 billion, with profits of the order of $2 billion of which one billion was to go the Palestinians.
Tel Aviv, however, had no intention on sharing the revenues with Palestine. An Israeli team of negotiators was set up by the Israeli Cabinet to thrash out a deal with the BG Group, bypassing both the Hamas government and the Palestinian Authority:
“Israeli defence authorities want the Palestinians to be paid in goods and services and insist that no money go to the Hamas-controlled Government.” (Ibid, emphasis added)
The objective was essentially to nullify the contract signed in 1999 between the BG Group and the Palestinian Authority under Yasser Arafat.
This political and financial maneuvering does constitute a relevant context from which to understand the recent events, for lurking in between the lines of this review of the discovery of vast natural gas reserves off the coast of Israel and Gaza is a very important question, which may be more or less conveniently stated as a kind of “existential question.” Which of us would want to see the income from this treasure go to an opponent who has made his intention clear by numerous statements or deeds that his goal is to wipe you out? And please note, I have phrased the question in this deliberately ambiguous way, for this is the way the Israelis look at the Palestinians, and that the Palestinians look at the Israelis, and both sides can produce a long list of actions and deeds to buttress their points.
This is where it gets interesting, if one wants to do a little high octane speculation about “what comes next” by looking beyond the current crisis of “initial attack” and “Israeli response”. One can make the prediction that some hack for Mr. Globalooney will propose “an international solution” that places the reserves under the authority of some “international agency” or its proxies, along with (one can almost hear the “dispensationalist bible maps of the ages” being unrolled and the scrolls of Joachim of Fiore or Charles Scofield or Hal Lindsey or Charles Caldwell Ryrie being duly and reverently venerated) a proposal to place all of the Holy Sites of the area under some sort of international control: the Al Aqsa mosque, the Wailing Wall, Golgotha, and so on. One is reminded of Jeff Sharlett’s sadly ignored books, The Family and C Street, and their reviews of the influence of this sort of thinking on American policy, including the crazy idea of some of these people to create a new kind of religion – “Chrislam” – based on Christianity’s Christ and Islam’s veneration of Jesus as a “prophet”.
