In a recent poll conducted by the New York Times/Siena, 74% of Americans indicated that democracy is “currently under threat.”

Of the people and/or institutions that were ranked as the biggest threats to democracy, the majority of respondents pointed to the corporate media as the principal threat to democracy.

59% of respondents specifically replied that the corporate media poses a “major threat to democracy,” with 24% indicating that the corporate media poses a “minor” threat to democracy. Only 16% believe there’s no threat to democracy.

According to a Just the News report, the attitude towards the corporate press was “strikingly bipartisan.” 95% of Republicans, 83% of independents, and 70% of Democrats describing the press a threat. By contrast, only 38% of Democrats consider the media a “major” threat, whereas 80% of Republicans and 53% of independents view it as a threat.

The so-called “Fourth Estate” is a declining institution that merits no respect from the American populace. Thankfully, the emergence of alternative media has provided people with a valid alternative to this dinosaur institution.

America First populists must have a plan to rein in the corporate press. Denying media entities government benefits, allowing alternative media outlets to flourish, and imposing Singaporean-style libel laws are keys to ensuring that the corporate media get put to rest once and for all.
