Elon Musk: Prepare for ‘Universal Basic Income’

by Zach Drew, TRU News:

What would America look like if 47% of working age Americans no longer were employed? And how would a country deal with a 47% job loss? It’s a prediction one study suggested in 2013 and one billionaire thinks he has an answer.

According to the Oxford University study called ‘The Future of Employment’, done by Carl Benedikt Frey and Michael A. Osborne, by the year 2023-2033, 47% of United Sates jobs will replaced by artificial intelligence and automation.

Well, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, believes the answer is held in something called a ‘universal basic income’ where every citizen is allotted ‘x’ amount of dollars each month to be able to live and sustain their life and basic needs.

“There is a pretty good chance we end up with a universal basic income, or something like that, due to automation,” Musk said “Yeah, I am not sure what else one would do. I think that is what would happen.”

The major concern with ‘universal basic income’ is obvious. Where will the allotted amount of money going to each person come from? It will come through radically taxing those still employed, those who have not yet lost their job do to automation. This is a nerve racking thought because it creates a lack of ambition in the general public. ‘Why work so hard if anything extra goes to the universal basic income program?’ Or, ‘Why would I want to go out and look for a job if all my needs are taking care of through program.”

This system could quickly become a means for totalitarian states to come into power because they will have created a state in which a people as a whole become dependent on the state.

We will soon find out how this could or could not work as we see that certain countries are ready to give this a shot.

According to CNBC Finland is preparing to test out a universal basic income. Currently, the country is soliciting feedback, and the actual test is expected to be carried out this year and 2018 with results available by 2019. The government will pay 2,000 people $598 per month according to a press release.

The idea of a universal income is becoming popular in other countries too. In the Netherlands 60,000 signatures were collected by activists requesting a referendum on a universal basic income.

“We are in favor of a basic income because everybody has enough security to feel free and to make own choices. To care or to have an own business. To work or to volunteer,” writes Johan Luijendijk, the leader of the Basisinkomen 2018 movement, in an email with CNBC. “When someone can live starting from own talents and callings, it’s better for everyone. With basic income we can cut social security and huge bureaucracy.”‘
