Several weeks before his surprise win of the 2016 presidential election, Donald Trump praised conservative icon Phyllis Schlafly — who had endorsed Trump for president in March – and stressed that America could do great things “if we started working together as one people, under one God, saluting one flag.”
“We’re all equal, and we all come from the same Creator,” said Trump in a Sept. 9 speech at the Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C. “If we remember that simple fact, then our future is truly limitless. There is nothing we as Americans can’t do.”
“Imagine what our country could accomplish if we started working together as one people, under one God, saluting one flag,” said Trump.
“It’s time to stop quibbling over the smallest word and time to start dreaming about the great adventures that lie ahead for our country,” he continued. “This is my promise to all of you: starting in 2017, we will be one American nation. It’s time to break our ties with the bitter failures of the past, and to embrace a new American future.”
Earlier in his speech, Trump praised Phyllis Schlafly, the matriarch of the conservative movement in America. She had died on Sept. 5 at the age of 92 and her funeral, at which Trump also spoke, occurred on Sept. 10.
“Phyllis fought very hard to the very end for a free and prosperous America,” said Trump. “She understood that to be truly united as a country, we can’t simply turn to government or to politicians. The bedrock of our unity is the realization that we’re all brothers and sisters created by the same God. Phyllis understood that. Phyllis understood that.”
