Is It Time to Leave America?

by Dave Hodges, The Common Sense Show:

Should you leave America, can you leave America? Are there more reasons to leave America? This is one of the most asked questions I receive. The answers to the first two questions are unclear to many. However, the answer to the last question is an unqualified yes!

Record Expatriation of US Citizens

Americans are leaving the country at record speed and the annual rate of expatriation is growing as over 150,000 Americans departed the former land of liberty for greener pastures overseas in the past year. In fact, there are now over five million Americans who are choosing to live outside the United States. Just why are Americans leaving this land of “freedom” and opportunity in record numbers, with no end in sight?

Would you renounce your U.S. citizenship if it meant you’d be sending less of your hard-earned dollars to Uncle Sam? Do you want affordable health care? Do you desire to live a long and healthy life? Do you want your children to have an affordable college education? Do you want to retire in relative comfort? Do you desire to live your life with more freedoms than you presently enjoy and not have to worry about government harassment? On balance, should most Americans stay or go?

There are reasons and myths which both favor and discourage expatriation. Below, I have listed a set of generalized statements about the viability of leaving America and these notions are examined.

The Highest Taxes In the World

The number one reason that Americans are fleeing the country is because of high taxes. The income tax rate rose last year to 39.6% from 35% for individuals earning more than $400,000 a year and married couples earning more than $450,000. Also, 77% of Americans will pay higher federal tax rates because the cuts in Social Security payroll taxes expired when Congress passed its tax package on New Year’s Day 2013 . The Tax Policy Center estimates that those who earn more than $1 million would pay an average of $170,341 more in taxes. If you are middle class or poor, you may not have the means to leave and your taxes have not been as dramatically impacted as the wealthy. It is a fact that expatriation does favor the upper middle class because one has to have a significant income to benefit from a potential move. In other words, if you are the owner of an Obama phone, you are better off staying in the country because you have little to tax.

We Can’t Leave Our Great US Pensions Behind

Meet the new robber baron, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew

It is a myth that America has a good set of retirement systems. You arenot getting the best pension package compared to other Western nations as America ranks dead last in overall pension benefits. And this is in the backdrop of the nothing-to-lose, second term Obama Administration, who is preparing to seize your 401k pensions. Secretary of the Treasury Jack Lew has already starting raided federal pension funds this last year so the government does not exceed the debt ceiling. America, your money is not even safe in the bank as witnessed by the fact that the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals who ruled that banks can steal the money of its depositors and it is legal! There are no golden years in America unless you are in the infamous 1%.

Americans Stay for Higher Pay

Americans no longer live in the highest salary paying country in the world. In fact, the United States does not even crack the top ten list of the highest salary paying countries on the planet in which Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Japan, Norway, Austria, Belgium, Ireland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom round out the top ten and pay their workers more than workers in the United States. In fact, the United States only ranks 20th in terms of overall gross pay! One would be very naive to call America the land of opportunity.

If We Leave Our Children’s Education Will Suffer

The Education Policy Institute assessed the affordability of higher education costs and found that the United States ranks 13th in higher education affordability. At a time when our schools are producing students which are performing last in math and science as compared our industrialized cohort nations, leaving the country, in many cases, would benefit a child’s educational attainment. And do not forget that the Common Core Standards have come online and they will dramatically increase the dumbing down of American students. Most Americans mistakenly think they will help their children to rise above the rest by going to college. That type of thinking can be a financial death trap. To those who think your children can borrow their way to a degree, think again. Today’s U.S. college loan practices, which serves to underwrite much of the cost of a college education, are the most predatory in the world. As of 2013, bankruptcy cannot cancel out a student loan debt and delinquent college students can now go to jail for nonpayment. In fact, several federal agencies have even “swat teamed” many delinquent student loan defaulters. Nowhere else in the world can we find evidence of these types of predatory practices being used against college students as we do here in the United States. Even those who are degreed and/or skilled in fields such as engineering or information technology skills, are really wasting their time working in the United States. Eight of the world’s ten highest-paying countries for information technology (IT) managers are in Western Europe, according to a new survey by Mercer Human Resource Consulting. The survey found that Swiss managers are paid the most, followed by those in Germany and Denmark. In fact, IT management is another field where U.S. workers fail to crack the top ten in income, the United States ranks 14th in IT management compensation. Even debt ridden Spain, Italy and Greece pay their IT managers more than what Americans earn on average. If you child is striving to become a high tech employee, they would be better leaving the country.

We Cannot Leave This Good Health Care Behind

The United States spends more than the next 12 nations for health care. However, it seems as if we are spending more and enjoying it less as, despite our exorbitant spending on health care, the United States ranks 50th in the world in life expectancy. Cuba, Puerto Rico and Spain have higher life expectancies than the United States. Americans live in the only country in the world where its citizens cannot bargain shop for its medicines in foreign countries because the pharmaceuticals have convinced congress to establish a pharmaceutical monopoly over U.S. citizens. Death by doctor has increased to 225,000 per year. Healthcare would be an excellent reason to leave.

Parts of America have already been leaving. Devolving into some horrible culture of crime & scum.

    SChitCongo, Illinois. no comment needed.
    Detoit-Zimbabwe. no comment needed.
Dearbornistan, Mich. Muslim capital of Amerikallah.
    L.A.tinoville (taco town)
Salt Lake City. multi-wife-carryouts. (but no woman is allowed to own multiple hubbies.)
    Miamista. Cubano central
El Paso, Tx. Cartel gateway. (one of many)
Newark, Compton, Harlem, Birmingham, etc etc.
Places are really going down hill.

The big crash will help to thin the weakest, most stupid cows from the herd.
EBT is the eve of of destruction.

    • Millicent

There will be no “Big Crash”… You are being conditioned to believe that. The system will morph into a new form of more efficient and oppressive slavery. If they start a world war then there will be a “Big Bang” and most will not survive that.

      • Craig Escaped Detroit

@Milli,…I think we all agree with your point that the beast is always trying to come up with better enslavement systems.

There is some obvious pushing for more wars by the war monger-bankers.

The world situation is headed for some changes, and there are different opinions of how it will unfold. Each of us does our best for what we feel is most likely or we follow some brainwashed ideas of faith or gut instincts.

We all have our reasons. Some feel it’s useless to do anything, others feel that proper preps will save them.
I have chosen my own style of insurance.
Others choose to leave it in the hands of their God, and we’ve seen how well it has worked in the past.

Even Jesus told people to get an assault-sword.

PS. Swords are semi-automatic weapons of massive, silenced death, never runs out of ammo and can kill a person with every stab or slice at the rate of 60 shots per minute until the person gets too tired to hold it. They never get jammed or need a new barrel, etc.

        • Millicent

They have been employing the time proven “Problem, Reaction, Solution” methodology for centuries to herd people into increasingly oppressive government control schemes and get them to accept reduced freedoms. That is what is being done with the constant repetition of the “Collapse” scenario…

“Hi Guys, we’re documenting the Collapse” caveat emptor…

          • Craig Escaped Detroit

OK, we get it. “Problem-Reaction-Solution” is used as a control & herding tool to keep corral us, and we are being distracted by the “prepping pushers”.

So now that we got that out of the way, and you have identified the real problem and real dangers, tell us, what exactly is the next step to improve things?

Do you suggest we sit on our hands and just let ourselves be controlled because it’s useless?
You’re saying this idea of a crash is all propaganda and our concern for it, is just another controlling tool and we are missing the real problems. so we are doing everything wrong.

Surely, if you’ve identified a bigger problem, then you either have a suggestion or you think we should just sit back, and watch Mickey Mouse on TV and not do anything?

I happen to think you are just wrong, you find this “prepping for a crash” as a distraction from the real problem. I think we really are headed exactly to the crash we are always talking about, and just because this talk & prepping irritates you does not mean it is wrong. It just means you don’t agree but you never seem to have anything better to put forward.

Be helpful, or be on your way. Just complaining about others is doing nothing to help any of us. When you make logical, good points about things, we like it. Choose your path of helpful, logical information, or just stand in front of the mirror and enjoy watching yourself complain until the cows come home.

            • Millicent

I did help you… You just do not want to hear it.

I think it was EdB who said a few days back a paraphrase of Mark Twain:
“It’s easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled.”

              • Craig Escaped Detroit

OK, so we are being fooled. You keep repeating yourself. You keep warning us with your warnings, yet you never present any evidence other than we talk about our evidence for a crash.

TPTB will use our distractions to sneak up on us. They will enslave us with more tools, and those tools are????…… what form will it take. Is there any defence or way out of it? If yes, then start telling us exactly how to do it, eh?

TPTB always want power and control, we see nothing new about that, but we do see logical, measurable facts and events that signal a real crash must be coming.
If you say no, then you’d better do a damn better job with better facts than Peter Schiff, Mike Maloney, David Morgan, Andy Hoffman, Bill Holter, Gerald Celente, Jim Willie, Craig Hemke, Turd Ferguson etc. etc.

What books have you published about it? Where is your webpage?

        • Ed_B

“Even Jesus told people to get an assault-sword.”

Indeed He did… even if the person had to sell their cloak in order to buy a sword. That was a BIG deal because it gets quite cold in the desert at night and a warm cloak is needed to keep warm and stay healthy. Clearly, the Lord supports the inherent right of self defense.

“They never get jammed or need a new barrel, etc.”

True but they DID break in combat at times, which is why old time warriors often carried a short sword and a dagger as back-ups to their main sword. With them, they could “acquire” a new sword when needed. 😉

  • Cajun

Craig, how did you fair during the Hurricane (Rain event)?

    • Craig Escaped Detroit

I did not even get any rain or wind. I was just west of the rain bands.
Before I retired from work, I started doing lots of internet searches of possible places to live at lowest expense & some decent living conditions, weather, culture, etc.

The “number of different variables” (crime, geography, taxes, weather, etc) led me a narrow corridor in Walton-county Florida. For some unknown reason of combination of GULF weather patterns, this corridor is the most safe, least lightning, fewest hurricane area of the entire gulf region. It also is the “county” of the LOWEST property tax rate in all of Florida (12.5 mills) this is half as much as just about every other county.

Florida also has no income tax, and this same county also contains the highest elevation above sea level (up to 341 feet) and my homestead sits 295-300ft above sea level.
Water aquifer quality is superb (most of the rest of Florida’s ground water is shitty).

My little corridor, is a narrow strip of land, about 10 or 15 miles WIDE, with Hwy 331 going right up the middle. I chose a homestead that is about 50 miles inland from the shore (and about 10 miles north of interstate 10.

The geography consists of ROLLING HILLS covered in Oaks, Pines and Magnolia trees (very few palm trees). I hate flat land and I love real forests.

So ALL you SGT preppers, are welcome to come to this very unique safe place where the living expenses are some of the cheapest in the USA. (My car insurance-Progressive- 6 month policy with FULL coverage & $100 deductable, costs ME only $240 .)
All homes that are “homesteaded-primary residence, etc” you receive a discount from your assessment of $50k, and the 12.5 mills of tax only applies for amounts exceeding that first $50k.

Total sales tax in this county is 7%. State income tax= ZERO. Electric rates in MY cow-town area is 10-11c/kw-hr.

If you get a place with a private well and septic tank (like me) you’ll have NO water bills.
This growing zone gets just enough “cold hours” to be able to grow apples, peaches, cherries, blueberries, but in some cases, you can find a few types of bananas that will also grow.

Citrus has a hard time here, but I’ve seen a few (mostly either Satsuma oranges or Meyer Lemon). Too cold for avocado. Loquat trees live here (amazing fruit that puts flowers in the fall, and ripe fruit in the SPRING time when nothing else is ready.)

The soil is worthless, it’s mostly sand, and you’ll need to truck in some decent dirt for a decent garden. This is a good place for solar panels. We get very plentiful and regular rainfall, so it’s a good growing climate.

Local crime stats are BELOW average. Stay away from all big cities (as crime stats always go up) and when the crash arrives, you don’t want to be in the middle of a half million starving residents. Stay away from the beach areas, as those always get the brunt of any storms.

The town I live near (I’m far enough outside of town, to be in the areas where everybody has a well and septic tank), is called Defuniak Springs (the county “seat”). Official population only 5000, but has 3 very good grocery stores, 24 hour super Walmart, Lowes, Hungry Howies & Pizza Hut, Walgreens, various auto parts stores, full sized Chevy dealership, Lumber, hardware, Tractor-Supply, fast food, etc, but ONLY TEN traffic lights. Nice, easy town with just the right amount of just about everything a family needs.

Plenty of city cops and county sheriffs who keep the peace. No bowling alleys or movie theaters. Nothing here to attract the idiot tourists.

Before any of you “locate” here, research, find and avoid the county JAIL area, avoid the Rail-road tracks (always noisy and railroads always haul hazardous things or the FEMA trains), avoid the “chicken farm-stinky-bacteria, mold, etc”, we have a little airport, a golf course, blah blah blah. THere is a small area that is known as the “bad side of town” (every town has one), stay out of there too.
Stay away from the sewage treatment, water treatment, and stay away from the high energy power lines, and nobody wants to live next to any school, business or church because of the traffic, noise, etc.

If you want the cheapest car rates, you’ll need to be in the RURAL areas away from town.
I’m plenty rural enough, with a few acres, but takes me only 14 minutes to be at the WalMart parking lot. Don’t speed, because they’ll hit you with big tickets, and they hide just about anywhere. (yes, they track SIDE streets too.)

Florida has good home/gun laws (stand your ground) and is a “Shall Issue” CCW state. I have NOT yet applied for any CCW, as I don’t want my name on that list just yet.

  • Craig Escaped Detroit

PS. Florida has a homestead protection law. The only ways you can lose your ‘homesteaded’ residence, are these=
1- if you don’t pay your property taxes.
    2-if the IRS takes it.
3.-if your mortgage company takes it.

But even if you are found guilty of wrongful death-murder and lose a $30 million dollar lawsuit (O.J. Simpson), they cannot touch your house.

My home has 5 acres, and a 1986, 1000 sq-ft mobile home, and even without the homestead discount, MY real-estate taxes are LESS than $280 for the YEAR. When I give up the Detroit homestead discount, only then will Florida allow me to have the Florida homestead discount rate and then my tax bill will be LOWER than $100. Mobile homes (manufactured homes) get much cheaper taxes, don’t forget that helpful tip.

Winters in this area, sometimes gets down in the 20’s, kills the bugs…but the daytime temps shoot back up to the 45-60F range most days. Survivable winters with little or no heating.

    • Ed_B

Sounds great, Craig. When I was a kid, my Dad was in the US Army and served at the Huntsville, AL missile testing base. We used to drive down to Apalachicola Bay on long weekends to fish. Great fishing down that way. The sea trout and sheeps-head were plentiful, good fighters, and great eating. That’s not too far south of where you are. BIG bugs down there and plentiful snakes as well. No biggie but watch where you step… and carry a pistol when fishing.

  • Cajun

GREAT! Just wanted to see if you were OK!
Needless 2 say, you have done UR home work and has paid off.
