Death knell. The word is knell. As in the sound of a bell. LIke in the beginning of Hells Bells.

Love your work both, Sean and JSNIP. However, when you mix your metaphors like “death nail” has in ‘nail in a coffin” with “death knell” as in the ringing of a bell to mark the passing of someone, the mistake diminishes your message by the tiniest bit. I don’t like seeing that because I hold you in the highest esteem and want your message to be loud and clear!

Right on Chuck. +1000 for proper language skills.

Knell is exactly the ringing of the bell to announce the death of somebody.

I am sure that people get this confused with “nails in the Lid of the Coffin” to secure the lid of the coffin.

They’ve heard the term “Death Knell” and thought they heard “Death NAIL”.

It is a very common thing to misinterpret SONG LYRICS when the words are not enunciated clearly enough or too much noise is on top of the lyrics.

    Good example abound.
Jimi Hendrix lyric “..excuse me while I kiss the sky” was often though to be “excuse me while I kiss this GUY.”

….The headline was meant as “put the last nail in the coffin,” but since it was met with such universal repulsion, we’ve changed it. Happy Saturday guys.

    John Donne: meditations 1624

“No man is an Iland, intire of it selfe; every man is a peece of the Continent, a part of the maine; if a Clod bee washed away by the Sea, Europe is the lesse, as well as if a Promontorie were, as well as if a Mannor of thy friends or of thine owne were; any mans death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankinde; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee.”
