The new chief economist of the International Monetary Fund warns about a strong trend in Europe to pull back from economic integration. Maurice Obstfeld referred to Europe’s refugee crisis and said there is a lot of pressure on open borders and workers’ mobility. He also warned that political pressure from the extremes could undo a lot of the existing economic integration in Europe. He said an obvious threat is Britain wanting to possibly leave the European Union. The British Prime Minister David Cameron has promised to hold a referendum on Britain’s membership in the EU by the end of 2017.
