from Western Journalism:
A group of computer hackers has done something no government has been able to do – take the terrorist group ISIS off the Internet.
Anonymous, an international hacking group, posted a video stating they were at “total war” with terrorist organizations because of the death and destruction caused in the Nov. 13 attacks in Paris.
It has been well documented by various governments, including the United States, that jihadists were using social media to recruit new fighters. The method has been effective because many, particularly young people, from the West have traveled to the terrorist lands to train with them. The group also tells young recruits to wreak havoc where they are if they cannot travel to join the jihadists.
“ISIS, we will hunt you and take down your sites, accounts, emails and expose you. From now on, there is no safe place for you online. You will be treated like a virus and we are the cure,” said a spokesman, dressed in black and wearing a Guy Fawkes mask that has become the hacking group’s signature look, in a YouTube post released on Nov. 18.
The video said that Anonymous has taken down more than 20,000 Twitter accounts with ties to ISIS. The group removed 5,500 ISIS-affiliated accounts on Tuesday, according to the group’s claims. The group has provided a list of sites and accounts taken down, according to the Anonymous representative.
The group’s official representative to the media, Alex Poucher, said the multi-layered attack on Paris is what prompted the move.
“They picked a fight with Anonymous when they attacked Paris, and now they should expect us,” he said, adding that the group “will not sit by and watch these terror attacks unfold around the world.”
