There seems to be an irrational fear of the Fed among the general investing public. It’s viewed as this sort of amorphous Star Chamber run by inscrutable folks with one name like Volcker, Greenspan, Bernanke, and Yellen.
In recent years, though, the Fed has made strides toward transparency. But very few people — investment professionals included — actually take the time to analyze the Fed’s public data releases.
The simple fact of the matter is that the Fed controls an astoundingly large collection of assets. It’s simply mind-boggling in its sheer size, and I’ll run through the numbers in a few paragraphs.
