A Declaration of Independence from Big Government

The Declaration of Independence, proclaimed by members of the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, is the founding document of the American experiment in free government. What is too often forgotten is that what the Founding Fathers argued against in the Declaration was the heavy and intrusive hand of big government.

Most Americans easily recall those eloquent words with which the Founding Fathers expressed the basis of their claim for independence from Great Britain in 1776:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness – That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed – That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

    Yanks are obsessed with the past. Like a Constitution is ONLY words. Your counry does not resemble these words written on paper. Get over it.

    U live in the “now”, where u bomb many people and terrorize the world. Where our Banksters threaten all people everywhere and who may begin new big wars for profit and domination. And to shut you all up!

      Sadly, Betty you are correct that the country doesn’t resemble the words of the Constitution. That was also the point of the article. But those words written so long ago offer sage advice for those seeking to re-establish a government based on self governence of a free people. The priciples of those words are as valid today as they were when first penned over two hundred years ago. Their actions backed their oath of life,fortune and sacred honor while your words convey only hostility and contempt to a people that have lost control of their lives,liberty and property. Truely we have lost our way, your kind words of support demonstrate the addage that none are so hopelessly enslaved as those that believe themselves free. Alas Betty your words implicate you and yours as well. Contemplate ill will, exercise your liberty to think freely. To learn from the mistakes of the past you must first recognize them. And you too, have a nice day.
