Fireworks went off at a House hearing about the IRS’s targeting of conservative groups on Friday, with a heated exchange between former Republican vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan and IRS chief John Koskinen over missing emails.
Koskinen refused to apologize at a House Ways and Means Committee hearing for the loss of ex-IRS official Lois Lerner’s emails, blaming it on a computer crash. “I don’t think an apology is owed,” Koskinen said.
Wisconsin Republican Ryan challenged Koskinen, charging there is a “pattern of abuse” at the IRS and Republicans don’t have confidence the agency is being impartial. “I don’t believe you. This is incredible,” Ryan said.
Koskinen shot back: “That’s the first time anyone’s said I don’t believe you” in his career.
