End of the line for the lead bullet? Regulations, bans force switch to ‘green’ ammo

by Perry Chiaramonte, Fox News:

When the last bullet-producing lead smelter closes its doors on Dec. 31, it will mark a major victory for those who say lead-based ammunition pollutes the environment, but others warn ‘green’ bullets will cost more, drive up copper prices and do little to help conservation.

The bid to ban lead bullets, seen by some as harmful to the environment, started slowly more than a decade ago. But with two dozen states, including California, banning bullets made of the soft, heavy metal, the lead bullet’s epitaph was already being written when the federal government finished it off.

First, the military announced plans to phase out lead bullets by 2018.

“those who say lead-based ammunition pollutes the environment”

Actually it DOES pollute the enviorment. We have known for decades how toxic lead is. And to have it in bullets is crazy, no? I understand its hard to find a good alternative but we should try and not call those people cracy environmentalists.

Reminds me of an old John Wayne movie: “Chisolm”

The local railroad / banking syndicate is trying to run Chisolm (Wayne) off of his large ranch by using various means to harass him.

One of the things they do is to hire a Mexican bandit and his gang (Arizona was still a territory at this point) to steal some of Chisolm’s cattle.

Chisolm hears about it and promptly goes out after the rustlers. He and his group finally catch up to the Mexicans and the conversation goes something like this…

Chisolm to Bandit leader: “those are my cattle that you have there, that is my brand on them.”

Bandit: “Oh Señor, we found these cattle wandering out on the range and did not know who the owner was… but we would be glad to sell them back to you.”

    Chisolm: “those are my cattle.”

Bandit: “we will sell them to you, do you have any Gold?”
    Chisolm: “No.”
Bandit: Do you have any Silver?”
    Chisolm: “No.”
Bandit: “Do you have any paper money?”
    Chisolm: “No.”
Bandit: “Well what do you have?”
    Chisolm: “Lead”

Chisolm proceeds to shoot the bandit and his men wipe out the rustlers. Chisolm rides home with his cattle… end of chapter.

    Never Trust the Government

Good movie, if you can find it, give it a view…
