Mexican drug cartels have been involved in large-scale illegal mining operations in the country for at least three years, including exporting iron ore to China, say Mexican officials.
In fact, the military takeover of Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico’s second largest port was aimed at cutting off the cartels’ export trade. Early last month, the Mexican military reportedly disarmed the entire police force in the municipality of Lazaro Cardenas in the state of Michoacán.
Three Michoacán state detectives were wounded in an ambush last week when they were traveling to investigate a mine taken over by criminals.
