A National Grid failure caused hundreds of traffic lights to fail, and both mainline and Underground trains to come to a sudden halt, leaving thousands of passengers stuck in tunnels.
When power was finally restored and the transport network got moving again, many office workers had given up hope, and were spending the evening in pubs and bars.
