Corruption in the System
by Joseph Carducci, Outsider Club:
Are you aware there is a prison problem in the United States? Indeed, we have become what could accurately be called a prison state.
Our country has more of its citizens locked up than any other nation on earth, and this is true both in absolute and per capita terms. In fact, a quick look at the numbers shows that in the U.S., there are 737 people incarcerated for every 100,000 in population. This is well above even the levels in Russia (current number two, with a rate of 611) and China (8th on the list, with a rate of ‘only’ 118 per 100,000 population).
The United States, which has long been considered the freest nation on earth, may be mislabeled. At least, this is the likeliest conclusion for you to draw from these numbers. Our country has only 5 percent of the global population, but we incarcerate a full quarter of the global prison population.
