While I am the first to speak out against bad cops, when someone shoots at a cop, then they are asking for it. I have read many posts on other sites stating that they should have waited him out, should have/could have blah blah, but the reality is the police had already breached the home, and the suspect fired on them. Once the shots were fired, they had the right to protect themselves, and they did via lethal force. It is a tragedy as this old fellow might have slipped a cog in the noggin, but the reality is if you shoot at cops, expect return fire.

@ blounttruth – Please, what are you saying?? Have you ever spoken with someone aged 85 or older? You have to speak slowly, nice and clearly. It’s very easy to confuse someone who is very old. According to reports this man was nearly blind, nearly deaf and he should be at 107 years old. He must have been terrified with people at his door, shouting, pouring in tear gas. What a horrible way for this very old man to die. Did they even try to find out about him? I’m sure the locals told them he was very old, scared confused but no, it’s easier to just murder him. Dreadful.

What does his age have to do with it? Yes, he was old. He was also, apparently, bat shit crazy–was already that way before the cops arrived and making death threats–and armed. Sounds to me like they expended a significant amount of effort to avoid a shooting incident, and they did take some incoming. I’m not a big supporter of cops, but based on this report, I don’t think they did anything wrong.

Also, you started by asking: “Have you ever spoken with someone aged 85 or older?” What does speaking have to do with it? Have you ever dealt with a violent dementia patient? My daughter nearly had her back broken by one of these oh-so-gentle elderly people and will be partially disabled for the rest of her life. My wife, also in nursing, has come home many times bruised and cut up.

You can’t reason with someone who is not fully in their own mind, nor use that as an excuse for any action they may take. Put another way, if this old guy decided to sexually molest your toddle daughter (if you had one) because some of his wiring between nurturing/happy feeling at seeing a cute child/sex got crossed, would you still be using the defense that he should be treated with kid gloves because he was so old…or would you want the guy’s nuts on a platter?

Bottom line: if you are brandishing a weapon, either use it or put it away. And if you shoot, expect to be shot at.
