Bitcoin Goes Parabolic: My Updated Thoughts

by Michael Krieger, Liberty Blitzkreig:

The price of apathy towards public affairs is to be ruled by evil men. – Plato

Bitcoin is the beginning of something great: a currency without a government, something necessary and imperative.

– Nassim Taleb on Reddit yesterday

So Bitcoin has finally dipped its electronic toe into the fringes of mainstream consciousness. The results have been, to put it mildly, explosive, divisive and highly emotional.  I can see why.

While I had been aware of it prior, I never truly became curious about Bitcoin until I read an excellent six page article about it in the New Yorker on October 10, 2011.  I had no clue how the technology worked, but it intrigued me to such a degree that I sent it to my email list of close contacts.

    OK – Reality check time.

We all know that the most effective and efficient way of rolling something out to as many people as possible, as quickly as possible, is to make it attractive/cool/trendy/special in some other way. That way people will embrace it. Not only will they embrace it but they will ‘desire’ it and flock to it. They may que for days outside a store and pay highly inflated prices to ‘the first’ to have the next gadget. Take the iphone, playstation, and xbox as cases in point.

Want to obtain loads of personal info about someone – thousands of man hours worth of research no less – quickly, easily, and cheaply? Get people to choose to give away. Heard of Facebook? Do you really think a spotty teenager ‘invented’ it? Think again.

Most people know by now that the replacement currency for our failing paper system will be elctronic (loads of public info about this out there). Well, people have been funneled into going electronic for the last 30 years – a slow gradual process that has been an incredible success, so much so electronic payments are now the ‘chosen’ or ‘prefered’ method of the vast majority of transactions, from debit cards and credit cards, to salary payments, to paying for utilities.

As we appraoch the end game for paper, those behind the curtain are seeking to make full electronic payments and a ‘cashless society’ a reality. Just as certain apple products made hand held tracking and monitoring devices ‘desireable’, bitcoin and whatever comes after it will make electronic ‘money’ the next ‘big thing’ for the thinking and unthinking masses alike.

Paper is being replaced by electrons – the same old game replayed but with a new deck of cards.

Oh the folly of it all. Why are we as a species so stupid that we volunteer to become slaves and choose to put on our chains and walk into our pens like good cattle.
