Glenn Greenwald sees through the carnival of establishmentarian pieties on display at the Democratic National Convention this week: “Excuse me if I don’t join in Democrats’ sycophantic cheerleading for an Obama presidency that has shredded laws and liberties,” he writes at The Guardian.
Greenwald reminds us that in 2008, candidate Obama campaigned in defense of whistle-blowers. An extract from the official “Document for Change” publicized what the Obama campaign “pretended to believe” about whistle-blowers four years ago:
“Often the best source of information about waste, fraud, and abuse in government is an existing government employee committed to public integrity and willing to speak out. Such acts of courage and patriotism, which can sometimes save lives and often save taxpayer dollars, should be encouraged rather than stifled as they have been during the Bush administration. We need to empower federal employees as watchdogs of wrongdoing and partners in performance. Barack Obama will strengthen whistle-blower laws to protect federal workers who expose waste, fraud and abuse of authority in government.”
