All good points – amazing just how many people take clothes for granted.
As for footwear I too have found steel toed work boots (with stiched on / welted soles) to have an excellent cost / durability ratio. Get them whist they are still cheap.
A good pair of thermal insulated, waterproof hunting boots are indispensable and will last for years.Big selection at Cabelas.
